Our first few months & technology businesses that you should consider in your town/city in 2014

This is the first Christmas that Revive & Thrive has been working together as a group and we have had a terrific reception.

Revive & Thrive developed (almost accidentally) through my research to identify effective and affordable technology for town, city centres and communities and I wanted to end the year reflecting on some opportunities that you could, or maybe should, be using in 2014.  Read our recent 2014 top town tech  tips here

Perhaps understandably, much of the activity has been about the Revive & Thrive Challenge and it’s £150,000 prize package for the winning town or city but behind this all the groundwork has been laid to get 2014 off to a great start almost from day one.

Those of you who I have been working with for a number of years will know that I believe that using incentives to engage and motivate resident and visitor behaviour is a very easy way to share a clear message.  I was very pleased to spend time working with Reward Your World this year and they have the platform to reward every element of ‘desired’ community behaviour including using sustainable transport, exercising, volunteering and of course shopping locally.  This opportunity is totally unlike any reward scheme that I have ever come across and now that they have launched  their first town, Reading in partnership with Reading Buses they are looking to expand into new areas.

Technology in high streets is increasingly creating a virtuous circle and no company provides evidence of this more than City Dressing.  They not only bring your town alive with their visual concepts but they fill voids and neutralise eyesores with graphics that  can create virtual shop windows allowing residents to use their mobile devices to carry out transactions in the high street.  City Dressing is a long-standing and trusted company in high streets and are about to launch new innovations for 2014

Using apps and websites for town and city centres may receive poor results without effective resident and retailer engagement but miconex (previously mi city) have created a fully managed, central content management system that addresses this.  They finish 2013 not only with 7 regions in Scotland, Congleton exhibitionrecently launched mi scotland in alliance with Scotland’s Towns Partnership and their first England region going live early 2014.  The new year will also see the introduction of e-commerce, mobile ticketing and true loyalty.

Having the latest high street innovation in your town is great but there is plenty of scope for taking the time to meet with residents and ‘listen’.  This is what the RSLM Practitioners do to great effect.  Root Solutions, Listening Matters have a tried and tested method that is delivering excellent results in communities.  However, RSLM have gone even further recently adding a digital solution for collating and mapping these results.  Read on to find out how and get in touch if you want to find out more
