miconex (previously mi city) launch their new nationwide digital infrastructure mi Scotland in alliance with Scotland’s Towns Partnership
Perthshire based technology company, miconex, unveiled their new nationwide app brand at the recent Scotland’s Town Conference in Inverness. mi scotland is a digital infrastructure that aims to connect Scotland’s businesses with local consumers and visitors using smartphone apps, web and social media. The mi scotland brand is an extension of the “mi” apps that have been launched over the past three years by the same ambitious, young company.
Owned and managed by Scottish entrepreneurs, Richard Gray and Colin Munro, miconex is the new parent brand that will house their original concept, mi city, and future developments including the new mi scotland app which is due for public release in January 2014.
The ‘mi’ brand currently operates throughout seven Scottish towns, cities and business improvement areas using the same app, web and social media model. The app has seen
some 35,000 downloads in the three years since its launch in Inverness and has seen the development of a weekly e-newsletter spin off that is mailed out to around 75% of these users.
Presenting to the delegates of Scotland’s Town Conference the pair presented a solution that would allow each town or city to operate at a local level, promoting businesses to consumers in their area. This would all feed into the larger, mi scotland platform effectively building a national, digital infrastructure that consumers could tap into quickly and easily.
Colin commented, “The simple concept allows consumers to tap into a portal app that showcases local businesses and events alongside offers, promotions and exclusive deals. Businesses register either by paying a one off fee or by joining under one of the brand’s
partnership arrangements.” He continued, “By extending this to a national platform, we have made it easy for consumers using say, mi perthshire, to access mi inverness, mi dundee or the broader mi scotland.”
The new mi scotland platform is being developed at a cost of over £170,000, an investment made by a combination of private equity, cashflow and support from local and national agencies. The new platform will also pave the way for further development; mobile ticketing, e-commerce and loyalty are all planned additions to the platform over 2014.
Based in Perth, the business employs 6 people; the team offers support to the business users of the platform whilst promoting its content via their social media and digital channels. miconex is currently in discussions with several local authorities in England and Wales with a view to developing portal apps and sites similar to the one unveiled last week.
Phil Prentice, Vice Chair of Scotland’s Towns Partnership said ‘The mi scotland infrastructure allows all towns in Scotland to have a voice, by connecting them together in one platform that voice becomes louder helping to showcase their vibrancy and vitality.’
