What is the value of street media in your town? How do you define street media?

Over the past 10 years City Dressing has performed a large number of outdoor media audits in towns and cities across the City Dressing square logo1country. We recognise that there is a large resource waiting to be utilised and an audit is the only way to start to measure the value of this resource.

Street Media is defined as the non-traditional outdoor media and related digital and promotional opportunities that are controlled or owned by a local authority or BID. The examples range from lamp column banners and information towers to digital shopping walls and interactive shop displays.

The value is defined by the media opportunity and the ability to sell or utilise the media. Taking lamp column banners as an example it is possible to sell the whole banner as advertising, sponsor the banner leaving 75% of it free for local messages or retain it is a promotional resource for the council/ BID.

At City Dressing we support this use of outdoor media to primarily improve place with revenue generation secondary.  We therefore advocate schemes that incorporate both. This is akin to a Christmas scheme replicated throughout the year with the primary purpose of supporting local events, place branding and increasing footfall.

Our free Outdoor Media Audit will cover all temporary and semi-permanent opportunities in the town. We will derive a list with a potential value by each item depending on how the council/ BID Celebrate Leeds, Vicar Lane and Briggate 015wishes to utilise them. Our aim is to create a cost neutral model that generates income to create a sustainable City Dressing scheme.

The benefits are to create a more attractive place by covering eyesores and empty shops, engage more effectively with the local population and dramatically increase the perception and footfall in town centres.
