On Monday 30th June 2014, the pioneering popup shop venture Space Qube opened the doors of its first shop and cafe, Cafe Qube, at Festival Place, Basingstoke. Cafe Qube is no ordinary cafe though, as not only can customers enjoy a range of high quality, locally sourced food and drink, they can also browse the ever-changing popup shop within the cafe. Every few weeks the theme of the shop will change and different brands, products and services will appear, providing customers with a variety of rich shopping experiences on a regular basis.
Located opposite Starbucks and just a few doors down from the Apple store, the first products to appear in the Space Qube shop is Hampshire Fare produce to celebrate the Hampshire Fare Food Festival during July. Shoppers are able to buy a variety of locally made goods including jams, chutneys, cheeses, cordials, cakes and locally blended Anvil coffee. This will be followed by an installation from Ultimaker, a unique 3D printing business, in August and Space Qube has many more opportunities for brands and businesses to let the shop space over the coming months.
Alison John, Founder of Space Qube, said of the opening,
“We believe that shopping should be about high quality, fun and memorable experiences and we can’t wait to bring this new retailing concept to life in Basingstoke. Our customers will see a new scheme with new products and brands every few weeks, plus they can sit back, relax and enjoy high quality coffee, tea and cake in our modern cafe.”
Alison is a talented interior designer from Hungerford Bottom near Southampton and she believes that Britain’s high streets can be revived by bringing theatre, quality and variety back into retail. With the plan to set up six dedicated shops by the end of 2016, Space Qube will sublet the spaces to a variety of retailers who want to lease premium high street retail space on a short term basis without the hassle of negotiating rents, rates and jumping through legal hoops to set up shops of their own. Space Qube will also provide them with the opportunity to achieve nationwide presence by “popping up” in a variety of locations across the UK either simultaneously or via a roadshow.
